My kids just recently received a new “Superbook” DVD in the mail. You remember Superbook don’t ya? Well, today’s version is far superior than the ones we grew up with in the 1980s. If you are not familiar with Superbook, they are a computer-animated series produced by CBN that brings children into the world of the Bible.
This latest edition was on Joshua, Rahab and the Battle of Jericho. This brought me to begin a series that I have been meaning to post. This week, we will be taking a closer look at Joshua. But before we begin, I thought I would add a little something from Rich Mullins. He once said that he used to look to the Bible for answers, only to find there were no answers in the Bible, just characters. It is character that we are supposed to find in the Bible—not answers—unless you are looking for answers on what type of character God wants us to have. Let’s take a closer look at the character (decency, goodness, honesty, integrity, probity, rectitude, righteousness, rightness, uprightness, virtue, virtuousness) of Joshua.
When it came time for Moses to pass away, his leadership did not. He passed his leadership onto another. The Lord had in place a successor from the beginning, though not revealed until the proper time. This successor was Joshua ben Nun, leader of the tribe of Ephraim.
Of Joshua, David Shyovitz said, “Joshua’s charisma and skill as a leader are evident from the success of the Jews during his lifetime, and their rapid decline following his death. Indeed, not until Samuel’s reign hundreds of year later do the Israelites find a comparable leader.”
We’ll begin our biography of Joshua tomorrow.
