The Role of The Holy Spirit in Salvation: Part 2

After Jesus rose from the tomb, He made this promise to his disciples: “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven” (Luke 24:49).

Not only is this promise recorded after the Resurrection, but John records Jesus having promised his disciples the Spirit on several previous occasions as well (John 4:22-24; John 14:17; John 15: 26; John 16:13).

The book of Acts records the fulfillment of this promise:

On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability (Acts 2:1-4).

The realization of this promise was to empower the disciples to do the work commissioned by Jesus. With the power of the Holy Spirit, they began to turn the world around. The promise of the Holy Spirit was not just for the eleven disciples, but for everyone.

For us, there might not be quite the same outpouring of the Spirit as the disciples had. “God’s disposal of the Spirit to his work is expressed in five different ways. He is said to give him; to send him; to minister him, to pour him out; and to put him on us.”[1]

Therefore, the Holy Spirit is “that person of the holy trinity whose office touches upon the believer. He is God communicating Himself. In and through the Holy Spirit God ministers to those who are His, and by this means He relates to mankind.”[2]

    1. The role of Salvation includes all three members of the Trinity, so certainly, we cannot say anything about being born again without The Holy Spirit. He is however often left out when discussed.
